Overview

The Molokai Native Hawaiian Beginning Farmer Program serves as a model farm program in order to help train and direct new and existing Hawaiian farmers in Hoolehua on the island of Molokai, Hawaii.  Hoolehua is the last intact rural native Hawaiian community where agriculture is the major economic activity.  The program strives to deliver and transfer sustainable and culturally appropriate agriculture technology through a strong experiential and hands-on componenet.Through the Beginning Farmer Program on Molokai, cooperators apply and are selected based on motivation and willingness to develop and implement a production plan that leads to the development of a business plan.  Soil samples, analysis and surveys are conducted along with site visits and evaluations.  Cooperators receive regular classroom and field training, weekly technical assistance consultations and “experiential learning” opportunities.  Participants receive business management training including record keeping and financial management.  The result is a well rounded, business minded, native hawaiian farmer who is able to feed his family, his community, and beyond.
